The European Medal of tolerance, awarded to outstanding
achievements in the development of the ideas of tolerance, democracy and
mutual respect on the European continent. Russian film Director, film producer
and screenwriter Andrei Konchalovsky is awarded for achievements in the field of culture,
which is of special importance to preserve the memory of the tragedies of humanity,
also, for the film “Paradise”. In the 73rd Venice international film festival this picture
received the “Silver lion”.

“Impressive black-and-white drama reminds us
all about the horrors of the Holocaust and the pain of the Jewish people, but first details and
impartially shows the various aspects of this tragedy”, — said the President
The European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation Vyacheslav Moshe Kantor.

The award was part of a memorial commemoration
The Holocaust in the European Parliament. The main focus at a solemn memorial ceremony
was done on people who died during the Second world war, and
also on the role of art in preserving memory of the Holocaust. The ceremony was performed
orchestra “Moscow Virtuosi” under Vladimir Spivakov.

In previous years the medal was awarded by His Majesty the king
Spain, the President of Croatia Ivo Josipovic and former Serbian President Boris Tadic
footballer Samuel Eto’o and the organization FARE (“Football against racism in
Europe”).
