The last few years, you are just a Director who makes films-of events. This is a deliberate line of conduct, or so? Because on your last picture of “the Crew” now does not speak only the lazy.
How can you consciously set itself the task: “I think I’ll pop the film-event!” No, of course. —
To remove the “Crew” is your idea or someone suggested?
You understand that ideas arise in different ways. “The crew” Alexander Naumovich Mitta is my favorite picture that my mind turned. And I loved this picture, even as a schoolboy I developed the scripts in this genre, and when he entered the film Institute, wrote several works about “the Crew”. I’ve always wanted to shoot a film-catastrophe in the memory of this film, inspired by “the Crew”. Finding a few years ago, the novel “Metro”, I went to the producers who bought the rights and tried to agree on how to put this picture, but we have not grown together. As a result, “Metro” wonderfully filmed directed by Anton Megerdichev. And suddenly the producer Leonid Vereschagin says: “But make a new “Crew!” I said, “No way!” Because for me the film of Alexander Mitta – the absolute and unattainable masterpiece, not repeat. But then Studio head RUB and another by the film’s producer, Nikita Mikhalkov, said: “And think, why not, it’s a good idea”. Anton Zlatopolsky, the third producer of the film, approved of the idea. To Vereshchagin, Zlatopolskaya Mikhalkov and we worked together on “the Legend №17”, already knew each other’s work and I understand that the proposal is very serious, a second chance will not. The temptation was so great that I went to Berlin, which I really love and appreciate, because he is the author of “the Crew”. MITT, unlike Vereshchagin, Mikhalkov and Zlatopolskaya, know that I love his picture, looked at me and said, “why, are you going to refuse? Don’t even try! I will support you, you will succeed!” After that I had no choice, because I realized that I could not resist the delightful temptation that haunted me since childhood. —
Understand that comparisons with the film Mitta you are already tired. But you know that in Russia, the remakes are, to put it mildly, ambiguous. Failed and “the dawns here are quiet”, and “Gentlemen of fortune”, and “prisoner of the Caucasus”. What is the secret of the “Crew”?
Probably that it was the most desperate and crazy idea, which you can imagine, passionate, and sincere. And none of it counted, we were motivated by love for “the Crew” Mitta and the desire to make a good film, nothing more. It was a huge risk on the part of producers who invested a lot of money on my part – because in our film there’s no precedent that the remake was successful – well, maybe except for “twist of fate”. Although our “Crew” is a sequel in form but in content it is closer to the remake. However, I really wanted to put this picture, so wanted to touch this material that I have not thought about the consequences and underwater reefs! Said Hitchcock: “My love for this material was stronger than considerations of morality!” And I rushed headlong into this adventure.

So we agreed quite a long time, four months rehearsing in great detail every scene, repeated, copied, changed dialogues – all in order to find new adaptations for the screen he was different, not like in the “Legend №17”. In one interview you said you’re looking for the answer to the question “why do good people so hard to live.” Managed to find the answer?
Yes, because they are kind, decent and fair, and they have to resist the wrong structure of the world and of evil, of meanness, cunning that lurks at every step. They, thank God are in the world the light now and then, so we all live, so we still exist as a society, as a country, as mankind – without them we’d be dead.

Wikipedia says that you are a co-author of several books of detective-crime genre. Is it true?
That’s true, but this is very old information. When I didn’t have work, and I was starving (it was mid 90-ies), I didn’t go to bandits, rogues and merchants did not go, and tried to live by his profession. That is, the Scriptures (because the first profession I’m a journalist, and the second – film expert and critic). Therefore, we together with my colleagues, friends and acquaintances from the University began to collectively write these novels and releasing them, thus, survived. It was a piece of black bread, without butter, but enough to somehow feed their families and themselves.—
