Being one of the most influential people in the world and a UN messenger of peace, Leonardo DiCaprio has every right to participate in the events that took place today in new York. The actor spoke at the signing ceremony of the Paris climate agreement at the headquarters of the United Nations.
Date was chosen not accidentally: on April 22 for several decades, celebrated Earth Day, when decided to pay special attention to the problems of ecology.
In his speech, Leonardo urged the world to abandon fossil fuels.
Our planet can not be saved, if not to leave fossil fuels in the ground, where it should be,
– addressed the audience 41-year-old actor. He encouraged everyone to think about what our descendants will turn back to the past and realize that the current generation could stop the destruction, but didn’t.
The Paris agreement on climate change was signed by 175 countries, including Russia. The document will determine after 2020 the emissions of greenhouse gases and measures to mitigate climate change.
The agreement constitutes a waiver of fossil fuels, but without exception, all countries should make efforts to reduce emissions, technological reequipment and adaptation to climate change.
We can congratulate each other, but it will lose all meaning if, after returning to their countries, we will not comply with the principles contained in this historic agreement. Now is the time for bold, decisive action. The world looks up to you and depends on you, will future generations praise you or blame,
said DiCaprio in his speech.
