Vasilev was born in 1931 in Moscow. In 1943, he entered the ballet school of the Bolshoi theatre and successfully graduated. After becoming a ballet dancer in a Large (class Asaf Messer), went to study at the acting Department of GITIS, and then for young writers Nikolai Karetnikov at the Union of composers. Gradually Vladimir Udic began to put the concert and ballet. In 1954, the fate of the artist joined with a fellow soloist Natalia Kasatkina. Soon the lovers have formalized their relationship.

Representatives from the theater say that this creative tandem of the whole epoch in the history of Russian ballet. According to them, the Kasatkina and Vasilyov from the first productions have been innovative to the dance. For many fans and connoisseurs of performances of “Vanina vanini” and “Geologists”, “the rite of Spring” marked a new stage in the development of this art form.

In the late 70-ies of the spouses were invited as leaders in the State concert ensemble “Classical ballet”, created by Igor Moiseyev. Since Kasatkina and Vasilev built the Foundation of his repertoire. The performances of the famous choreographer was attended by Maya Plisetskaya, Nikolai Fadeyechev, Ekaterina Maximova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Yuri Soloviev, Alexander Godunov, Irina Kolpakova and other stars.

In 1992, the theatre was officially renamed the State Academic Theatre of Classical ballet under the direction of N. Kasatkina and V. Vasilev.
