19 may in France, finished 71st at the Cannes film festival. This year the jury was headed by cate Blanchett and she is together with a team of professionals had to identify the best independent pictures of the year.

In the end, the Palme d’or went to Japanese Director, Hirokazu Koreeda for his drama “Shop thief”. The picture impressed many critics, and why the Director was considered one of the top favorites of the show. The Grand Prix went to a controversial American Spike Lee for his film “Black all kinds of things over”.

But the award for best Director went to Poland’s Paul Polakowska. His film “the Winter war” is already considered as the main applicant on “Oscar 2019” for the best foreign language film. A couple of years a different picture of the Director “IDA” has won the first in France and then in USA.

For many was a complete surprise that the main favorites of the show remained without awards. So, the scandalous painting “the House that Jack built” by Lars von Trier not won prizes. Recall that during the premiere of the film, many viewers angrily left the room due to the increased cruelty of history.

The surprise was that the tape Kirill Serebrennikov “Summer” received only one award for best soundtrack. The painting was considered among the contenders for the Palme d’or, but in the end remained without award.
