Apparently, the fourth season of the show has all chances to become the last. This was stated by series showrunner Steven Moffat in an interview with The Telegraph.

The reason why “Sherlock” is coming to the finale was insane popularity of Benedict Cumberbatch, which negates the attempts of the creators of the soon to shoot another season.

According to Moffat, in the fourth season Benedict continues to act only because of the great love and respect for his fans, but in the future unlikely to give as much time to the project, which in fact outlived its usefulness.

Moffat said that he was incredibly surprised that the BBC managed to negotiate with “star” actors Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to participate in the new season.

“I don’t know how long we can keep the show afloat — says Moffat. — Personally, I would like it, but solves not my voice. I won’t be surprised if these shots will be the last for the series”.
